Back to School Already!?

August is here and that means back-to-school activities are fast approaching!

Going back to school is an exciting time for lots of children and adults. It can also be a stressful time.

SETICC offers some suggestions to help you and your child get off on the right foot.

1. Plan some fun end of summer activities. Your wallet doesn’t need to be overflowing to take advantage of hikes, swims at state parks, and spending quality time together.

2. Develop a new routine. Yes, summer likely meant staying up later to chase fireflies and take advantage of the sun staying out longer. A week or two prior to the start of school, practice slowly adjusting those bedtime routines. Going to bed fifteen minutes early every few days can add up to an extra hour of sleep. Trying to wake up just a bit earlier each day can help, too. Routines are not just about sleep routines. As is age appropriate, talk with your child about what after-school routine might work for them. Downtime right after school with homework coming after dinner? As much as possible, allow your child some choice in developing their new school day schedule.

3. Encourage your child to get involved in school activities whether it is a club or organized sports. Resiliency can grow when children are part of a group. School is an excellent place for children to try new things and build their resiliency.

Will your child walk or ride the bus to school? If so, is there someone who you can pair them with that might make that walk or bus ride a little more fun for them?

4. Although school is a great place for lots of kids, it can also be a stressful and even a scary place for some children. Help your child identify allies at their school. Who can your child talk to if they are feeling anxious or nervous about school or something/someone at school.

5. Talk with your child about school. Steer away from “Yes” or “No” questions and keep them open-ended.

Expect a few weeks of… adjustment. New routines and change are hard for most of us. Kids’ brains are still developing which means their coping skills, insight, and ability to handle lots of changes can feel extra hard for them. Give them and you a little more grace as you ease into school and the fast-approaching fall season!

Think back-to-school has nothing to do with you? Think again!! We are including an image to serve as a refresher… stop means stop for school buses.
